Today, we’re going to be looking at a brand new strain from CBD Hemp Direct called Gunpowder (15.8% CBDa).
This order also came with 2 other strains (Berry Exotic – 14.2% CBDa, Artisanal – 11.4% CBDa) and hemp hash made from Cherry Wine kief. I’ll be reviewing those in the coming days, so keep an eye out for those.
The shopping process on CBD Hemp Direct is very straight forward. The checkout funnel is easy and attractive. I was able to pay with my credit card, but there was also an option to use Paypal.
I really didn’t have a choice here. I ordered this very late Friday night, and it came in the mail on Monday. This was shipped from Nevada, and I’m on the east coast.
For a few hours, I thought that maybe I was special because I’m “Bud from mjgeeks”, but then I saw someone else comment that they ordered the day after me, and are getting theirs today. So much for that 🙂
For those concerned about the shipping label, the top line had someone’s name, and the second line said “Artisan Tea”.
There was no smell on the outside of the package.
The flower came in a plain white smell proof zipper bag. Nothing fancy, but it’s a high quality way to store the flower and keep the smell in.
This flower doesn’t come with a COA in the box, but it is available on the website.
My only issue is that the COA doesn’t include tests for heavy metals, molds, and toxins. CBD Hemp Direct definitely isn’t the only company that doesn’t have this info included, and I know the market is still relatively new, but getting another test doesn’t seem like it would be that hard.
This is something I think we deserve to know before consuming these products, and I’m going to be looking for it from here on out.
Testing Grade 5/10
Safety testing: No (-5)
Potency Testing: Yes (+3)
Terpene Analysis: Yes (+2)
First Smell 7/10
It’s a very pleasant smell, but just not the strongest smell. Of course, grinding or agitating will bring out a much more intense scent, which is very nice.
Bud Quality 5/10
I had to go with a lower score for bud quality because of the bud size. I’m not an expert in growing cannabis, but the extremely small bud size makes it seem like the flower wasn’t mature. I could be wrong though.
The thing that brought the score back up some was the fact that the flower is relatively stem free, relatively trim free, and also completely seed free (as far as I can tell so far).
Vaping Taste 6/10
The taste is really nice. The only problem is that the taste doesn’t last very long. For me and my Arizer ArGo, the first 3 draws have really good flavor. After that, it drops off pretty quickly.
The relatively high amount of CBD is definitely effective for pain relief and relaxation, but I think it’s really interesting that this flower contains a relatively high amount of Guaiol
According to Leafly:
Guaiol is not an oil but a sesquiterpenoid alcohol, and is also found in cypress pine and guaiacum. It has been used for centuries as a treatment for diverse ailments ranging from coughs to constipation to arthritis. It is also an effective insect repellent and insecticide.
Guaiol’s potential medical properties include: — Antimicrobial — Anti-inflammatory
Overall Value 6/10
Comparing this to what’s currently out there, I have to go with a little bit lower of a score, but the cost per gram is definitely in the right ballpark. Especially if you’re buying an ounce.
I’m not sure what the deal was with the bud size, because the picture on the website had buds that looked big. But even without the big beautiful buds, this is a really unique strain, and the medicine is definitely there.
Thanks for reading, and as I said, we’ve got several more reviews coming this week! Stay tuned to mjgeeks.com and mjgeeks youtube channel so you don’t miss them!
Cheers! — Bud
